History of Dietary Guidance Development in the United States – A Timeline
The timeline below provides an overview of the development of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans beginning with the current edition released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2026 and going back to the release of the Dietary Goals for the United States published by Congress in 1977. A Historical Collection of Dietary Guidance reflecting more than one hundred years of dietary advice provided by the U.S. government is also available on the National Agricultural Library website.
