The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee currently is developing and implementing  protocols for each question. These protocols – or plans – outline how the Committee will answer each of the scientific topics and questions it is examining.

About the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee will review the scientific evidence on specific nutrition and health topics from pregnancy to birth and into older adulthood. The Committee’s work will end with the release of its scientific report to the Secretaries of USDA and HHS.

Approaches to Examine the Evidence

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is using three approaches to examine the evidence as they work to answer the scientific questions from USDA and HHS. Each of these approaches has its own rigorous, protocol-driven methodology, and plays a unique, complementary role in examining the science.

Advisory Committee Meetings

The Advisory Committee will meet approximately five times to complete its work. During these public meetings, the Advisory Committee discusses its review of the scientific evidence and makes plans for future Committee work.

In this new step, the Departments asked for public comments on topics and scientific questions to be examined by the Committee to support the development of the upcoming 2020-2025 edition of the Dietary Guidelines. The topics and scientific questions shaped the areas of scientific expertise needed on the Committee.

The Committee’s work will end with the release of its scientific report to the Secretaries of USDA and HHS in 2020.

USDA/HHS Dietary Guidelines Development 

The Dietary Guidelines is designed to help all Americans eat a healthier diet 

USDA and HHS update the Dietary Guidelines every five years. As they develop the Guidelines, USDA and HHS will consider the Committee’s scientific report – along with input from Federal agencies and the public. This work will end with the release of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
