About the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee reviewed the scientific evidence on specific nutrition and health topics from pregnancy to birth and into older adulthood. The Committee’s work ended in June of 2020, when the Committee submitted its Scientific Report to the Secretaries of USDA and HHS.

Approaches to Examine the Evidence

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee used three approaches to examine the evidence as they worked to answer specific questions from USDA and HHS. Each of these approaches had its own rigorous, protocol-driven methodology, and played a unique, complementary role in examining the science.

In this new step, the Departments asked for public comments on topics and scientific questions to be examined by the Committee to support the development of the upcoming 2020-2025 edition of the Dietary Guidelines. The topics and scientific questions shaped the areas of scientific expertise needed on the Committee.

In September 2018, USDA and HHS made a public call for nominations to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. This step ended with the selection of 20 nationally recognized experts who served on the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

Advisory Committee’s Scientific Review

The Advisory Committee conducted an independent, science-based review of specific topics and supporting scientific questions related to nutrition and health – from birth to older adulthood. The public was invited to submit comments to the Committee throughout its work, starting on March 12, 2019 and ending on June 10, 2020, and follow its discussions at public meetings. The Advisory Committee’s work ended with the release of the Scientific Report of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to the Secretaries of USDA and HHS at the end of June 2020.

The Dietary Guidelines is designed to help all Americans eat a healthier diet

USDA and HHS update the Dietary Guidelines every five years. As they develop the Guidelines, USDA and HHS will consider the Scientific Report of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee – along with input from Federal agencies and the public. This work will end with the release of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
