Topic and Question Identification
In this new step, the Departments identified topics and scientific questions to be examined in the review of the evidence supporting the development of the upcoming 2020-2025 edition of the Dietary Guidelines. USDA and HHS added this step to promote a deliberate and transparent process.
USDA and HHS first proposed topics for the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines and posted the topics and questions for public comment. The topics and questions were refined based on public and agency input. The topics and supporting questions focus on priority scientific questions from birth into older adulthood and reflect a continued focus on patterns of what we eat and drink as a whole, on average and over time.
Advisory Committee Selection
USDA and HHS established an external Advisory Committee to conduct an independent, science-based review of specific topics and supporting scientific questions related to nutrition and health – from birth into older adulthood. USDA and HHS requested public nominations to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee from September 6 – October 6. The topics and supporting scientific questions the selected Committee will examine in their review of the evidence were also released. USDA and HHS will consider the Committee’s scientific review as the Departments develop the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Advisory Committee's Scientific Review
The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee will review the body of scientific evidence on nutrition and health from birth into older adulthood. The review will occur beginning at the first public meeting into 2020. The Committee will discuss its review of the evidence during approximately five public meetings. The public may attend all meetings of the Advisory Committee, and, throughout the length of its review over multiple months, is encouraged to submit comments to the Committee related to the topics and supporting scientific questions being examined. The Committee’s work will end with the release of its scientific report to the Secretaries of USDA and HHS.
USDA/HHS Dietary Guidelines Development
Each edition of the Dietary Guidelines that USDA and HHS develop builds upon the previous edition, with scientific justification for changes informed by the Committee’s scientific report. The scientific report is a resource that helps to inform the Dietary Guidelines -- it is not a draft of the Dietary Guidelines.
As USDA and HHS work together to develop the next edition of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines, the Departments will consider the Committee’s scientific report – along with input from Federal agencies and the public.
