Thank you for Engaging in the Process
HHS and USDA provided multiple opportunities for public participation before, throughout, and after the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s review of the science, and the Departments value everyone’s engagement.
2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee
The public was invited to engage in the process to develop the Dietary Guidelines during the Committee’s review of the evidence. Below is a snapshot of this engagement during the Committee’s work:
- Public Comments: The public was invited to provide comments to the Committee on all aspects of its work for more than a year – from January 19, 2023, to October 7, 2024. A total of 9,946 comments were submitted during this comment period. View the public comments to the Committee by visiting Regulations.gov (Docket ID HHS-OASH-2022-0021).
- Oral Comments: In July 2023, members of the public were invited to register to provide virtual oral comments to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee during the Committee’s third meeting. All commenters were confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis, and each speaker was given the option to submit a recorded video or present live oral comments. A total of 82 speakers provided oral comments to the Committee during the meeting.
- Public Meetings: The Committee held seven meetings that were well attended by the public. More than 1,000 people attended each meeting virtually, with representation from all 50 states and from more than 25 countries.
- Professional Education: Registered nutrition professionals had the opportunity to earn continuing education credits for watching the live or recorded Committee meetings. Interest in continuing education was high, with about half of meeting registrants expressing interest in this opportunity. Professionals expressed their appreciation for the CPE credits and more than 3,250 CPEs were approved across the seven meetings.
- Registered Dietitians (RD), Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN), Dietetic Technicians, Registered (DTR), and Nutrition and Dietetics Technicians, Registered (NDTR) can still obtain credits by watching the recordings for Meeting 5, Meeting 6, and the Scientific Report Meeting. Meetings before April 1, 2024 are no longer eligible for CPEs since they were approved under the Accredited Provider Program and expired.
Another opportunity for public engagement was provided during the process to appoint the Advisory Committee.
- HHS and USDA accepted nominations from the public to serve on the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee from June 15 – July 15, 2022. The Departments received nominations from individuals and organizations, and individuals were encouraged to nominate themselves to help support the goal of having a balanced and diverse Committee. The 20 members of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee were selected from the pool of candidates who were nominated by the public. Members were selected based on their professional experience, educational background, demonstrated scientific expertise and to ensure a balanced and diverse membership that is reflective of the racial, ethnic, gender, and geographic diversity within the U.S.
Identify the Scientific Questions
The first opportunity for public involvement in the process to develop the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030 occurred with the posting of the proposed list of scientific questions.
- HHS and USDA requested public comments, on the proposed scientific questions from April 15 – May 16, 2022. Approximately 1,400 public comments were received. About half of these submissions were identified as unique comments. View the public comments on the proposed scientific questions by visiting our page on Regulations.gov (Docket ID HHS-OASH-2022-0005).
