About the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
A large body of science now shows that healthy eating patterns can help people achieve and maintain good health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans reflects this science through its recommendations.
This edition of the Dietary Guidelines provides five overarching Guidelines that encourage healthy eating patterns, recognize that individuals and families need to make shifts in their food and beverage choices to achieve a healthy pattern, and state that all parts of society have a role in supporting healthy choices. These Dietary Guidelines also embrace the belief that a healthy eating pattern can be tailored to meet personal, cultural, and other preferences, and can fit within a budget.
The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines is created for professionals and policymakers who work with or provide programs for the public. The information in the Dietary Guidelines is used in developing Federal food, nutrition, and health policies and programs. It also is used to inform Federal nutrition education materials designed for various audiences and for the nutrition education components of HHS and USDA food programs. Information from the Dietary Guidelines may be used by professionals who work in businesses, schools, community groups, media, the food industry, and State and local governments to develop programs, policies, and communication for the general public.
